When your solar panels produce more electricity than you use, the extra energy is sent back to the utility grid through a process called net metering. With 1-to-1 net metering at full retail value, each kilowatt-hour (kWh) of excess energy you send to the grid earns you a credit that you can use later when you draw power from the grid.

At the end of the 12-month billing cycle, if you've sent more energy to the grid than you've used, your utility will issue an Annual True-Up. This process settles your account by compensating you for any remaining unused credits, but at a wholesale rate rather than the full retail rate. After the True-Up, your credit balance is reset, and the new billing cycle begins.
